The idea for this event was prompted by the fact that two members of An Garda currently have sick children on St John’s Ward, along with their friends and colleagues they decided they wanted to raise money.
Both are currently receiving excellent care from the staff in St. John’s Ward. This ward depends greatly on private donations and fundraising.
St John’s Ward is home to Ireland’s national referral centre for Paediatric Oncology/Haematology and Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) It is a national service for the following patients:
1) Oncology
2) Malignant Haematology
3) Non-Malignant Haematology
4) Haemoglobinopathy
5) Haemophilia and Related Coagulation disorders
6) Haemopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.
Children diagnosed with cancers and haematological disorders do require special attention and treatment, however new and better ways of treating these conditions are being discovered every day.
Through our colleagues we have a true appreciation of the difficulties and heartbreak endured by all concerned. We have liaised with staff at the hospital and set up a fund raising committee. This Committee decided a white-collar fight night to be the most appropriate vehicle to raise funds for the hospital. Due to Gardai being involved it is proposed to advertise it as a “Blue Collar” Fight Night.
We are well on the way to providing a memorable fight night which will be attended by 1600 people at the Wright Venue in Swords on Friday the 10th February.
