Colm Church Scholarship Scheme

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the founding of St. Raphael’s Garda Credit Union, we are delighted to announce the introduction of the Colm Church Scholarship Scheme in memory of our former Chair, Colm Church who passed away suddenly last year. 

We were blown away by the significant number of applications received, and the standards were incredibly high.

We have selected 10 finalists. Each of our finalists will receive an Apple Macbook Air Laptop to the value of €1,500 and 3 of our finalists will be chosen to receive €3,000 per annum to support their educational journey.

Meet our 10 Finalists

Ava Dempsey

Clane, Co Kildare

Ava is a first year student studying Psychology in University College Dublin.

She received an academic excellence award from her school and the UCD Entrance Scholar Award for outstanding achievement in her Leaving Certificate. A fluent Irish Speaker, she is a member of An Cumann Gaelach. She’s involved in swimming from a young age and received certification as a Lifeguard & Cardiac First Responder in 2022. In her spare time, Ava works as a volunteer with the Samaritans.

Dáire Reid

Lusk, Co Dublin

Dáire is a second year Engineering student in University College Dublin. He has a keen interest in languages and speaks both Irish and German. 

Dáire is passionate about Irish Traditional Music and plays both the Uilleann pipes and the fiddle. He is currently a member of the National Folk Orchestra of Ireland. 

Dáire also enjoys sport and plays hurling for the Fingallians GAA, Swords.

Dominic Hayes

Donaskeigh, Co. Tipperary

Dominic is the youngest of three children and is in third year studying Pharmacy in University College Cork. 

A Cystic Fibrosis (CF) patient, he has had to balance medical demands with his education all his life and has done lots of charity work for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and TLC4CF. 

In his spare time Dominic likes to train in the gym, do MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. 

Eimear Kelleher

Ovens, Co Cork

Eimear is a Secondary school Student at Gaelcholáiste Choilm in Ballincollig.

She hopes to study primary school teaching or music after she sits her Leaving Certificate. A classical and traditional violin player, Eimear has won several awards for her musical talent.  She is the proud leader of the Cork Youth Orchestra and has obtained the gold medal for advanced violin from the RIAM. Eimear has an Irish Traditional Music Diploma from the London College of Music.

Hannah Drea

Tullamore, Co. Offaly

Hannah is a fourth year student studying Medicine in the Medical University of Lodz, Poland.

She spent her whole life dreaming of becoming a doctor and repeated her Leaving Certificate and HPAT to fulfil her dream. This involved taking the huge step of moving to Poland and adapting to life abroad. Music and sport are a big part of Hannah’s life, from playing the guitar and singing, to football, camogie and swimming. She has represented her county and club, Ballinamere Durrow GAA, winning several underage county finals.

Kay Gannon

Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath

Kay is the eldest of 4 children and is in second year studying Psychology in University College Dublin. She left school early and restarted her studies by participating in a Youthreach programme. This enabled her to access a Post-Leaving Certificate course in Psychology and in turn led to her entry into UCD. 

Kay is proud of her achievements and has proven that through hard work and determination, you can achieve your goals.  

Leanne Healy

Letterkenny, Co. Donegal

At 17 years, Leanne is our youngest finalist and a 6th year student at Loreto Convent, Letterkenny. 

She has a keen interest in all things science related and hopes to study Biomedical Science in University of Galway when she finishes the Leaving Certificate. 

Leanne was chosen as a Regional Winner for the Oireachtas Essay Competition, and was presented with a prize in the Dáil Éireann. She is also a member of the European Youth Parliament.

Moya Gilligan

Trim, Co Meath

Moya is in second year studying Irish and French in Trinity College Dublin. 

She was awarded Student of the Year during her 6th year graduation in Secondary School in recognition of how hard she worked and the challenges she had to overcome. One of Moya’s proudest achievements is climbing Kilmanjaro in August 2018 as part of a group ‘Kilmanjaro Achievers’. Moya wants to progress a career in languages either through teaching or translating.

Ross McHale

Kildare, Co Kildare

Ross is in first year studying Fine Art in the National College of Art and Design. 

A passionate artist from a very young age, he was awarded Student of the Year and Art Student of the year in his final year in Secondary School. Ross’s artistic talents have been recognised many times and he has had his paintings on display in the National Gallery many times in recent years. 

Outside of art, Ross also has a keen interest in nature and wildlife conservation.

Sean Kirwan

Templeogue, Co. Dublin

Sean is in first year studying Medicine in RCSI. A student of Mac Daras Community School, he did his Leaving Certificate in 2022 and first studied Law in UCD. With Medicine never far from his mind, he decided to re-sit the HPAT and finally got a place in Medicine in 2023. 

Sean is passionate about football and is proud to play for Dublin on the under 20’s team. He also plays for his club, St. Jude’s on their Senior Team. 

Eligibility

I am a member of St. Raphael’s Garda Credit Union at the time of application. 

The duration of the planned/current course is three years or more. 

The planned/current course is a full-time level 7 or higher, or equivalent. 

You have not completed a third level course and are not applying as a mature student.

You have obtained a Character Reference from School Principal or Head of Faculty.

There will be three successful applicants who will be rewarded an amount of €3,000 p.a up to a maximum of four years or for the course duration, whichever is shorter.

We will have a shortlist of ten applicants who will receive  a prize of an Apple MacBook Air Laptop to the maximum value of €1,500.

Should the successful applicant defer commencement of the course, the payment of the scholarship will also be deferred. 

Yes, you can apply for the subsequent years. We will require your latest exam results, and provided all other criteria are met.

Unfortunately, the Colm Church Scholarship is not open to those who are applying as a mature student, those who previously completed a third level course, or those applying for post graduate courses of study.

  • Interview dates will be conducted on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th April 2024.
  • Those selected for receipt of scholarship will be notified by Friday 3rd May 2024.
  • Prizes will be presented in St. Raphael’s House on Friday 6th September 2024.

Rules of the Scheme

  • A Scholarship Committee (the “Committee”) has been appointed by the Board of Directors to manage the selection process.
  • The Committee comprises of the CEO, our external auditor and an external advisor.
  • A shortlist of ten applicants will be selected by the Committee for interview.
  • All ten applicants shortlisted for interview will receive a prize of an Apple MacBook Air Laptop to the maximum value of €1,500. 
  • Three of the shortlisted applicants will be awarded up to the value of €3,000 p.a. up to a maximum of four years or for the course duration, whichever is shorter.
  • The Committee will select the recipients they consider to be most suitable in line with the evaluation criteria and without reference to any further parties or organisations.
  • The first year’s scholarship payment will be made to the successful applicant on the production of satisfactory evidence that they have been offered a place on a suitable course and have accepted that offer and been enrolled into that course.
  • Annual payment of the scholarship is entirely dependent on successful completion of the preceding year of the course and continued participation in the course by the recipient.
  • The Committee’s decision is final in all matters.
  • Applicants must be a member of the credit union at the time of application.
  • The application must be in respect of a fulltime undergraduate course of study of degree standard (i.e, level 7 or Level 8 on the NFQ Scale) in one of the Irish higher educational institutions.
  • Applications will also be accepted in respect of courses offered outside of the jurisdiction, provided the qualification awarded on successful completion of the course is of an equivalent standard on the NFQ Scale and is awarded by a reputable higher education institution.
  • Course duration must be for a minimum of three years.
  • Students already in third level education can apply for subsequent years, provided all other criteria are met.
  • In the event that the applicant discontinues his or her participation in the course, the entitlement to the scholarship award ceases immediately.
  • Payment of the scholarship is dependent on the recipient commencing his/her course of study in the year the scholarship awarded.
  • Should the successful applicant defer commencement of the course, the payment of the scholarship will also be deferred.
  • Any changes in a recipient’s circumstances relating to the course of study should be referred to the Committee for consideration.
  • All applicants are required to submit a completed application form together with a personal statement of not more than 600 words outlining ‘What the Scholarship would mean to me’.
  • A character reference is required from the Principal of the second level school for applicants that have not yet commenced third level education.
  • For applicants already studying in a third level institution, a character reference is required from their Head of Faculty.
  • All applicants must be available for interview with the Committee.
  • Fully completed application forms must be received in the timeframe advertised by the credit union. Late or incomplete entries shall be disqualified.
  • Canvassing is strictly prohibited and will render candidates as disqualified.
  • The Colm Church Scholarship scheme is not open to those who previously completed a third level course, those who are applying as a mature student or those applying for post graduate courses of study.
  • Only one scholarship per family at any given time.
  • The Colm Church Scholarship scheme is not open to connected parties of the Committee members.
  • Payment of the scholarship will be made annually, following receipt of proof of acceptance to the course in the first year, and on confirmation of successful completion of exams for the following years.
  • Payment will be made to the Share Account of the successful student on 1st September annually or on the next working day if the 1st September falls on a non-working day.
  • Students must pass all exams to be eligible for scholarship in the following year – Repeat years will be excluded from payment.
  • The Committee reserve the right to reduce the award amount in the event that the successful recipient is in receipt of other financial awards / bursaries.
  • The Committee will determine the evaluation process for all applications received and will ensure that the evaluation process is carried out fairly and consistently each year.
  • Evaluation criteria of each candidate will focus on the following areas:
    • Academic achievement
    • Strength of personal statement
    • Character reference
    • Learning, financial, health, or other personal challenges overcome
    • Special achievements
    • Extra-curricular interests / voluntary work
  • Successful applicants must participate in promotional events as deemed necessary by the credit union.
  • The Board of Directors reserve the right to change the rules of the scheme at any time.
